This paper presents the tools framework that was developed in the context of the EnTRAINER LIFE21 CET project. The tools that make up the framework were built to allow energy managers and energy experts of industries to assess energy and CO2 saving potentials but also to aid during energy transition audits that will take place during the project. The framework is composed of four tools. The first tool utilizes the cumulative sum (CUSUM) methodology to detect consumption anomalies or extreme deviations from the baseline pattern of the company’s consumption. The second tool offers a quantified estimation of the building’s insulation status, while the third is composed of four simple questions that can detect energy efficiency potentials in the involved site. Finally, the fourth tool aims to create part of the energy transition audit report that will occur in the project.

This paper presents the implementation and impact of an innovative educational and training program, delivered as a postgraduate program at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. This program addresses the urgent demand for skilled professionals within companies capable of facing the complexities of decarbonization. A blended learning approach that integrates theoretical instruction with practical applications is applied. The program represents an essential component of a paradigm shift from traditional energy audits to a holistic and comprehensive “Energy Transition Audit” methodology. This novel approach was developed by a consortium of four European countries in the framework of a European-funded project.

The industrial sector is a major global consumer of energy, and meeting Europe’s climate neutrality targets will require a complete transformation of the global energy industry. To this end, Energy Transition Audits (ETAs) provide industries with a comprehensive and tailored action plans to reduce their energy consumption while mitigating the impact of CO2 emissions. In this context, this work presents the first results of an Energy Transition Audit conducted in a Valencian food processing facility within the framework of the European project EnTRAINER- Energy Transition Audits towards Decarbonisation. Starting from the industry baseline in terms of energy consumption and costs and production through a one-year analysis, five improvement actions are proposed and evaluated using the following performance indicators: energy and cost savings along with emissions reduction. Finally, the improvement measures are prioritized based on the company’s emissions reduction targets. Therefore, this innovative approach empowers the industries to monitor their progress towards achieving their decarbonization targets.

Towards clean energy transition, companies need to implement measures enhancing competitiveness and sustainability, especially energy efficiency (EE) measures. EE is highly important in energy-intensive industries. However, EE measures within industrial firms are hindered by several barriers. e.g., lack of information regarding EE opportunities, low technical competence, difficulties to finance the measures, etc. Recognizing the need to identify the benefits of the energy transition and to propose solutions to overcome them, the European funded project EnTRAINER aims to introduce an innovative framework to develop a sustainability culture in companies. This will be achieved by introducing an energy transition audit, by improving the auditors and stakeholders’ skills via training and by the development of proper digital tools. Scope of the paper is to address the internal barriers in companies and discuss ways to tackle them by adopting a wide cultural approach towards decarbonisation. Furthermore, the overall EnTRAINER educational and training program, consisting of accredited courses and in-house trainings is discussed.

Industries are major energy consumers around the world, achieving climate neutrality requires significant effort. In order to lead this effort, Energy Transition Audits (ETAs) provide industries with comprehensive and customized action plans to reduce their energy consumption while mitigating their CO2 emissions. Within the framework of the European project EnTRAINER- Energy Transition Audits towards Decarbonization, the Universitat Politècnica de València has developed the free online course Energy Transition Audits for Energy Professionals. This course is open to students of electrical engineering and similar disciplines who wish to learn the basics of decarbonizing the industrial sector. The course consists of 6 didactic units, 5 of theoretical principles on energy transition audits and a practical exercise that puts into practice the contents of the previous units. Participants who pass the evaluations and the practical exercise receive a certificate of completion of the course and 5 ECTS.

This research is a state of the art of the main barriers and solutions that can be found in the implementation of energy efficiency measures and methods in industry, such as Energy Audits or Energy Management Systems (EMS). It aims to bring together in a single document the lessons learned from the efforts of the European Union over the past decade to increase energy efficiency in industry. The article catalogues and analyses 20 legal, technical, economic, cultural and organisational barriers that are still present today and as an added value it provides with a table of multiple, accessible and current solutions as well as with potential improvement pathways to overcome each of them. The ultimate purpose of this work is to stablish a higher starting point, with more awareness and available solutions, from which to start in order to accelerate the decarbonisation of the industry and subsequently be able to achieve the latest and more ambitious objectives set in the ‘Fit for 55’ package in the EU.

EnTRAINER is a LIFE project whose aim is to introduce a paradigm shift from conventional energy audits to a new, holistic and complete methodology of “Energy Transition Audits” (ETA). With this new approach, the main focus is to provide a multi-benefit scheme and a complete action plan towards full decarbonisation of the audited sites.
This article presents the new and integral training scheme developed in EnTRAINER for energy transition audits in the industry sector across 4 European countries (Spain, Italy, Greece and Romania). The result of the research provides a holistic training programme based the three main pillars: the necessary upskilling of actual energy auditors on the new energy transition methodology, the education of current and future energy professionals, and in-house staff training in the audited sites.

The energy transition demands a skilled workforce to optimize efficiency via energy audits and innovate
renewable technologies amid shifting global energy dynamics. This paper details the structure, content, and implementation of educational and training initiatives, designed and implemented within a European funded project framework, highlighting their alignment with European standards and the goal of empowering energy professionals for the era of decarbonization. It also assesses how the skills and competencies enhanced in
these actions can contribute to the decarbonization process of organizations respectively highlights the fact that academic institutions can bridge the gap between theory and practice through immersive learning approaches.
